CNN:”Radical Liberal Media”?

Today I am posting about CNN. I read a story about a CNN reporter being pelted with objects and being the brunt of yelled obscenities by an angry crowd at a Sarah Palin rally last week because some in the crowd feel that CNN is part of the “left-wing Radical Liberal Media” that is unfairly attacking the McCain/Palin campaign.

On the other side of the rally, the FOX NEWS reporter was happily signing autographs and was treated as a hero.

I was interested if anyone other than me thinks that out of the three major cable news outlets, CNN is BY FAR the most UNBIASED.

After any given large political event ,such as the recent debates, viewers of MSNBC would have been treated to a heavily tilted Democratic point of view, while viewers of FOX NEWS would get the heavily conservative Republican point of view. Watching their channels, I see little attempt to balance out the viewpoints of each party.

I watched CNN for all four debates. After the debates were concluded, I saw a discussion anchored by Wolf Blitzer, who to the best of my knowledge has never made his personal political beliefs known on the air. CNN provided two tables of analysts to comment on the just completed debates. One table held a combination of senior political analysts, reporters covering each campaign, a legal expert, and John King who provides info on polling and the breakdown of the electoral college maps. The other table held 6 partisan analysts, 3 Republican and 3 Democratic. Each person was allowed to give their full viewpoint on what they saw in the debate. I flipped over to the other channels and did not see anywhere near the level of “fairness” to both sides in their coverage.

Even now, on a typical night, if a story is done about one particular candidate, CNN will use a split-screen to allow someone from the other side to add their own comment or explanation to the story. Last night, CNN was showing the Barack Obama/Bill Clinton rally live. In the middle of Obama’s speech, CNN cut away to go back to the studio where Anderson Cooper announced that they would now be showing excerpts from John McCain’s earlier interview with Larry King so that “both sides could have equal air-time”. CNN did not broadcast the 30-minute Obama infomercial because it felt that it wanted to remain neutral and did not want to give one candidate more coverage than the other.

They even air a segment after rallies, speeches, and debates called “keeping them honest” where they have an independent firm check the accuracy of statements or claims made by each candidate. Even last night, after the other networks had shown the Obama infomercial, they were on the air discussing what was the truth and what was a stretch as to the things that Obama had talked about.

So, enlighten my idiot brain please. Why is is that they are considered the “Radical Liberal Media”?
By what I see in the cable news arena, they are far more neutral than the other channels.

  1. You’re right. Of the three, CNN is the most balanced. I tend to watch MSNBC because I’m a Democrat and big Olbermann fan. MSNBC has more liberal commentators in the evening, but I think their broadcast of the news during the day is on par with CNN. Fox, however, ALWAYS has a right-wing slant – you can just hear it in their voices.

  2. Because if you believe lies, the truth sounds biased.
