Music Flashback: Asia

The British Rock Group Asia was formed in 1981.

Their debut album “Asia” was released in 1982.

The group has at various times contained former members of the bands Yes, King Crimson, The Buggles, Uriah Heep, Roxy Music, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

The group enjoyed a great of success on the US Rock Charts starting in 1982, and to a lesser degree was also successful on the Billboard Top-40 Charts.

The four original members of Asia were:

John Wetton – Vocals, Bass
Carl Palmer – Drums
Geoff Downes – Keyboards
Steve Howe – Guitar

Their hits included:

Heat of the Moment
Only Time Will Tell
Sole Survivor
The Heat Goes On
Don’t Cry
The Smile has left your Eyes
Go!
Days Like These

Four of their singles cracked the Billboard Top-40 with their top hit being “Heat of the Moment” which peaked at #4 in 1982.

Thirteen of their singles cracked the Billboard Rock charts. Of those, “Heat of the Moment” and “Don’t Cry” each reached #1 on the Rock Charts.

They have not had a chart single since 1990.

The group saw a huge turnover in personnel during the 1990′s.

Asia has now split into two distinctive groups each comprised of some former band members and some new members. The groups are known as Asia and Asia featuring John Payne.

Responses

  1. Asia – good stuff.
    Uriah Heep – AWESOME!!!!

  2. Lost me with groups when you passed early 70′s . Became music again instead of protesting war. Music was not very good after that anyway even contemporary.
