Flashback: Katarina Witt

I remember my Mother ordering me to sit down and watch the Winter Olympics on Television with her. She was watching Ice Skating……gah!! Why in the world would a teenage guy want to watch Ice Skating? Give me some Hockey or some Norwegian Dudes wearing full-body Speedos speeding down a track….but Ice Skating? No way sister!

Then, a stunning girl came out onto the ice…

My jaw hit the floor….

“Whooooooooooo…is that?!!!”

If any red-blooded American Male will admit to having watched Women’s Figure Skating during the 1980′s, it will undoubtedly have been for one good reason…

Katarina Witt

In contrast to many of today’s tiny, athletic, pre-pubescent gymnasts on skates that dominate Women’s Figure Skating, Katarina Witt was one of the first to exude pure Beauty and Sexuality.

Ask any guy in the age range of 40-50yrs old who the first woman that comes to their mind when asked to name just one figure skater from the 1980′s……

and I would bet over 90% of them blurt out Katarina Witt!

Katarina Witt was born in Staaken, East Germany in 1965.

She won Olympic Gold Medals for East Germany in 1984 and 1988.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of East and West Germany, she skated for Germany in the 1994 Olympics but finished 7th.

In 1995, she was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.

In 1998 she posed for Playboy Magazine. Her issue was only second issue of the magazine to completely sell out. The only other issue with that distinction featured Marilyn Monroe.

She won an Emmy Award in 1990 for the HBO Special “Carmen on Ice“.

She has also worked as an Actress with small parts in films such as “Ronin” and “Jerry Maguire“.

Now a successful Businesswoman, she founded a Production Company, “With Witt Sports and Entertainment” in 1995. Her company markets Figure Skating Productions in Germany and around the Globe. In 2005, she founded the Katarina Witt Foundation to provide aide for children with Disabilities.

  2. Tif – All the girls I knew in School hated her too…. :) But…… I can’t even remember who the popular American Skater was back then… :)

  3. I had a huge… uh, crush… on her after the olympics, unplucked eyebrows and all. But that was the 80′s, right?

  4. Brainrants – Yep….definetly a thing of the 80′s…… you don’t see many unplucked eyebrows these days….that’s for sure…..

  6. Wow, I loved her–she was so like Madonna on ice. See that’s where I missed the boat, I never really knew what we girls were supposed to like or hate. Great one, Maaaaaaaaahhhhhhk, made me want sharpen up my old white figure skates!

  7. I hate you. I really, REALLY hat you. First your initial picture pops up, and I realise my first thought is “Isn’t she cold, skating in that VERY thin negligee?” Then I read down to her birthdate.
    I’m OLDER than she is.
    YEARS older!
I hate you. (Stomps off, grumbling about “young whipper-snappers”. :D )

  8. I loved watching her.
