Boston is a classic American Rock Band first formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1976.
Their debut album “Boston” was released in the summer of 1976.
The album was a huge success, selling over 17 Million copies. It is the 2nd most successful debut album in US History.
The album would remain on the Billboard Album charts for 132 consecutive weeks.
Boston quickly became one of the premier US Rock Bands of the 1970′s and early 80′s.
At it’s peak, Boston was:
Tom Scholz – Guitars, Keyboards, Bass, Percussion
Brad Delp – Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards, Percussion
Sib Hashian – Drums, Percussion
Fran Sheehan – Bass
Barry Goudreau – Guitars
The group has released just five studio albums during their career.
Eight of their singles have cracked the Billboard Top-40 charts in the US.
Their lone #1 single was 1986′s “Amanda“.
Their classic hits include:
More than a Feeling
Long Time
Peace of Mind
Don’t look back
A Man I’ll Never Be
Feelin Satisfied
Amanda
We’re Ready
Can’tcha Say
Cool the Engines
I Need Your Love
In one of the biggest head-scratchers in music history, the group lost the Best New Artist Grammy Award in 1976 to….. The Starland Vocal Band of “Afternoon Delight” fame…. Unbelievable!!
By 1990, lead singer Brad Delp had left the band, with others leaving in previous years, resulting in Scholz being the only original member still left in the group.
Delp reunited with the band in 1994 and joined the group on tour in the summer of 1995.
Lead Singer Brad Delp committed suicide in 2007.
As a tribute to Delp, longtime Boston fan Tommy DeCarlo wrote a song for Delp and posted it on his MySpace page. The song made it’s way to Tom Scholz who invited DeCarlo to perform at a tribute concert for Delp. DeCarlo was working for Home Depot as a Credit Manager at the time.
Tommy DeCarlo has been performing as the new lead singer for Boston since 2008.
The band is now comprised of:
Tommy DeCarlo – Vocals
Tom Scholz – Guitars, Keyboards, Percussion
Kimberely Dahme – Bass
Jeff Neal – Drums
Gary Pihl – Guitar, Keyboards

Fantastic stuff. When they did the album “Third Stage”, they did not use any of the new technologies – they went back to the same older tech they used (when it was new) on the first two albums.
And a trivia point for ya – the “cities in flight” on the cover of their debut album are pulled from the novel “Cities In Flight”, where a newly discovered device called a “spindizzy” allows entire cities to be lofted from earth and sent into space.
The real hook? The book is by James Blish, who wrote the novelizations of many of the early “Star Trek” live AND animated episodes!
Boston and Trek – how can you miss with that?!?
