Movie Flashback: Silverado

Another of my favorite movies of the 1980′s.

Any Western that casts John Cleese as an English Sheriff in the Wild West has to be a classic!

Silverado was released in 1985.

It starred:

Kevin Kline – Paden
Kevin Costner – Jake
Scott Glenn – Emmett
Danny Glover – Mal
John Cleese – Sheriff Langston
Brian Dennehy – Cobb
Rosanna Arquette – Hannah
Jeff Goldblum – Slick

This was one of Kevin Costner’s first “feature” roles. The film was directed by Lawrence Kasdan who had directed the 1983 film “The Big Chill“. Costner had a role in that film that was cut from the final version of the film. He was offered the part of Jake in Silverado to “make up” for the Big Chill exclusion.

Writer/Director Kasdan also wrote “Raiders of the Lost Ark“, “The Empire Strikes Back“, and “Return of the Jedi“, among many others.

John Cleese’s first line in the film as Sheriff Langston is “What’s all this then?”, a direct reference to the first line that any Law Enforcement types always uttered on the classic series “Monty Python’s Flying Circus“.

The movie was filmed in Northern New Mexico. The set was left intact and has been used for other productions including “Young Guns”, “Lonesome Dove”, “Wyatt Earp”, “Last Man Standing”, “Wild Wild West” and others.

Kevin Kline and John Cleese would reunite in the 1988 classic “A Fish Called Wanda“.

Brian Dennehy, playing the villain Sheriff Cobb, had just appeared as a kind alien in the film “Cocoon” prior to the release of Silverado.

The film was nominated for Academy Awards for Sound and Musical Score.

With all the main actors going on to bigger projects, this film was one of the few great films of the 1980′s that did not get a sequel. What a shame. It was truly an entertaining movie and easily one of the best Westerns of the last 25 years or so.

  1. I remember this movie! Guess what I’m watching this weekend.

  2. So… was this a serious movie, or like “Blazing Saddles”? I managed to miss this somehow – then again, my 80s were … busy. ;)
Have you ever caught “The Frisco Kid” with Gene Wilder? Great stuff, AND co-stars Harrison Ford. It’s worth the catch on cable or a rent.

  3. No-Hio – Good lord John…. You are like the Sahara of great 80′s movies! ……… What did you watch back in the 80′s?……. You got a lot of catching up to do! Silverado really has everything….comedy, drama, action, …….it is a great flick! :)

  4. H.E. ELLIS – Great choice! :)

  5. Well, in the early 80s I was going to school in the afternoons, doing stuff for my dad in the mornings, and spending weekends playing D&D. The mid-to-late 80s I was busy flying around the country, chasing women. One became a great friend, and the other became my wife, plus I got my beloved 1987 Cavalier Z-24 in the midst of it.
So movies were WAY down on my list of things! I had PLENTY of other .. (ahem) .. “activities”.

  6. No-Hio – You better get you Netflix que updated…… you got a lot of catching up to do buddy! I’m gonna have to sick Harem Security (Jamie) on ya! :)

  7. Ah, promises, promises! She’s threatened to beat me up once, and never made good on the offer! You have ANY idea how much neatsfoot oil you have to use on a 10′ long bullwhip? It ain’t cheap! ;)

  8. Dude, this was a really great movie.

  9. brainrants – Yep…. I need to go dig it out and watch it again now….. great flick! :)

  10. luvd the whole, reminds me of some good thoughts. keep it up mate… :)

  11. Brian Dennehy – what a sexy bear of a man, born in 1938 and still going strong!

  12. Adeeyoyo – A nice guy too! I wrote to him a few years ago and got a signed pic from him. Very underrated actor :)

  13. One that made me hollar like Fish Named Wanda

  14. Great cast, great writing, great movie. I don’t think Brian Dennehy is underrated as much as under appreciated. He’s one of those actors that always makes me smile- even when he’s playing a bad guy. He just oozes charm, but I wouldn’t trust him for a minute.

  15. Pd1248 – I think Brian is one of our great character actors. You are right….. he can play charming and bad both….which is real hard to do…. :)
