Music Flashback: ZZ Top

ZZ Top is a Houston, Texas based Rock Band first formed in 1969.

The band’s distinctive sound is heavily influenced by the Blues and Southern Rock.

The first incarnation of the band included Billy Gibbons, Dan Mitchell, and Lanier Greig. Greig and Mitchell were quickly replaced in 1969 and the classic lineup since that time has been:

Billy Gibbons – Vocals, Guitar
Dusty Hill – Bass, Keyboards
Frank Beard – Drums

Their debut album was released in 1971.

The group is instantly recognizable thanks to Gibbon’s and Hill’s distinctive chest-length beards. The two have not always had the trademark looooong beards…. The group gained popularity and became very successful during much of the 1970′s….minus the full-length beards. In 1977, the group took a 2-year break from touring, at which time Gibbons and Hill each grew their now trademark chest-length beards.

The group has sold over 50 Million Albums worldwide during their career.

The group has placed 8 singles into the Billboard Top-40 charts here in the US and countless other singles onto the Billboard Rock Charts.

The group’s music videos were staples on MTV through much of the 1980′s.

Their many hits have included:

LaGrange
Tush
I Thank You
Cheap Sunglasses
Gimme All Your Lovin
Legs
Sharp Dressed Man
Sleeping Bag
Stages
Rough Boy
Got Me under Pressure
Velcro Fly
Doubleback
Concrete and Steel
My Head’s in Mississippi

and many others…

Their highest charting hits on the Billboard Top-40 Charts were “Legs” and “Sleeping Bag” which reached #8 on the charts.

Six of their singles have reached #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Charts.

They are one of the few groups I have seen more than once in concert. I saw them in London in the mid 1980′s and then again in Salt Lake City in 1991. My wife was deaf for a month after the SLC show.

The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

After over 40 years together, the group is still very active and can still be found frequently touring the globe.

Responses

  1. I LOVE THESE GUYS! They’re like “Skynyrd Lite.”

  2. H.E. ELLIS – Great in concert too if you ever get to see them….. (just take earplugs….because for just 3 guys…they are freakishly loud!) :)

  3. Now you’re talking! Uh..blogging. Now you’re blogging. This is my band

  4. One of the great lost treasures is to play a 45 of “Legs” at 33 1/3 rpm. It becomes this slow, bluesy, bayou delta kind of song. Pity that the iPod generation will never know that trick.
I once entertained an entire room with an “air guitar” of “legs”. Knowing how to play the REAL guitar put me head and shoulders over the pretenders. Almost got the girl, too. Fortunately she got hijacked by some other guy, leaving me free a few months down the line to meet my wife-to-be.
    Who says sci-fi cons don’t rock? ;)

  5. No-Hio – There ya go folks….. a mental picture of John here playing Air Guitar to “Legs”………. anyone else ready to hit the bottle?……… ha ha :)

  6. Too rate! (hic!) I’m awready tree shoots … shuts … sheets to the … the … aw heck, I need another – (BELCH!) – drink….

  7. They weren’t especially my kind of music but I loved the entertainment factor and of course I love Billy Gibbons on Bones because I love Booth, I mean the show Bones.

  8. Bicycle Girl – Good Grief….. I bet you got a David Boreanz poster in your locker at the hospital don’t you? Admit it! You know it’s true….. :)

  9. Those beards STILL freak me out, but I do like their tunes!

  10. Okay, I recognize that song, but don’t know much about the band. So, let me see if I’ve got this right…..the guy named beard is the one WITHOUT the disgusting beard? Eeeeewww! I can’t think of much of anything worse than those. Good music, though.

  11. Queen of the Courtroom – Yep…. Beard = No Beard….. Go figure :)

  12. I love that last photo – quite the silliest picture of these guitar gods I have ever seen…thanks

  13. Been Rocking with the Top since 1976.. Every Show has great sound, show and great looking women.. Half naked!! Can’t wait to hear those speakers crank out the Rock!!
