Movie Flashback: Stripes

A Comedy classic from 1981.

Although already well-known from Saturday Night Live, this was the film that really put Bill Murray on the map as a comedic film actor.

He had done “Meatballs” earlier, which was a modest success, but this was his first “Major” film.

Also in the cast were a then unknown Sean Young, Judge Reinhold, and John Larroquette. John Candy also appears in one of his first film roles.

This also marks the first pairing of Bill Murray and Harold Ramis who would later go on to star in Ghostbusters together.

Best line in the movie, in my opinion, is when Bill Murray’s girlfriend is leaving him, Murray yells out “You can’t leave….all the plants are gonna die!” For some reason, that quote has stuck with me all these years and I am still tempted to yell it out whenever anyone in the family says they are leaving to go someplace.

The Army base on which the movie was filmed is Fort Knox, Kentucky.

The actor playing John Larroquette’s assistant in the film is John Voldstad who would go on to become one of the silent “Darryl’s” of “Larry, Darryl and Darryl” fame on “Newhart“.

Buried waaaaay down in the credits is a young Bill Paxton who is billed only as “Soldier”.

Director Ivan Reitman would later go on to direct Murray and Ramis in Ghostbusters.

Kim Basinger turned down the role played by P.J. Soles.

P.J. Soles, who played one of the female Military Policewomen, was married to actor Dennis Quaid at the time of filming.

This was yet another R-Rated film from the early 80′s that I was forced to watch once it came out on VHS, long after its release, due to me not being 17yrs old and my family not yet having cable which would allow us to get HBO or SHOWTIME.

  1. I’ve spent my whole life looking for that RV. There’s a guy here in the Midwest, Tom Raper (that’s his real name), who claims he can get ANY RV you want, but he’s never found it for me. Or returned my calls and Emails…..
Maybe he’s waiting for the “Aunt Jemima treatment”? ;)

  2. No-Hio – I guy with that last name is actually selling anything?…….. I think I would have changed my name if I was him….

  3. Yeah, I couldn’t remember his exact location when I first posted, but he is here in Ohio. Gosh, what a total surprise … NOT! :D

  4. No-Hio – Are you reading this Jamie?????? There is a guy selling RV’s in Ohio with the last name RAPER!………. That needs to be on your list for next weeks article! :)

  5. To this day I still say “lighten up, Francis” when one of my kids gets in a mood.

  6. I actually got to stay in the same barracks used in that film one time for training I was doing. Hate to say it, but they tore them down about five years back to build a new barracks. Sean Young, on the other hand, is still around and is maintaining excellent structural integrity…

  7. H.E. ELLIS – And the kids undoubtedly say “HUH?”…….. I know all of my 80′s movie references fly right over my kids heads……. :)

  8. brainrants – I am still in love with Blade Runner Sean Young….. :)

  9. My parents were total hippies and we didn’t even own a television until I was 10, and even then we were not allowed to watch it much. The point of sharing this? I have never seen this film along with a great many others from that time.

Clearly a lesser known form of parental neglect: allowing children *too little* t.v.

  10. Follmiester – you poor girl….. You need to let me provide you a list of must-see flicks from the 80′s….. then you need to call in sick at work for a week and camp out at home and get caught up…… Your life will be so much richer and fuller for it…… :)

  11. The Onion actually wrote an article about my parents: “Cool Dad Raising Daughter On Media That Will Put Her Entirely Out Of Touch With Her Generation.”

Is this a relevent enough comment? ;)

  12. Just like savorthefolly and others, I hardly saw any movies during that period as I was trying to save my marriage (waste of time!) and we never went out anyway, lol!

  13. Follmeister – I don’t know….. you better watch out…… as you can tell, this blog is known to spark highly confrontational blow-ups that cause readers to come to virtual blows online…… such is the nature of having such a controversial and rage-inducing blog like mine….. I guess your comment and blatant attempt to get readers to click on your link can slide…. THIS TIME….. but just you watch yourself!! You are now on Double Secret Probation! And if you do not know what movie that is from…… I will reach through your monitor and beat you about the head with the closest cat of mine that I can grab! :)

  14. Denise – Well…. it’s time to make up for lost time! Get started renting those flicks! Maybe there can be a sneaky way to bill the charges back to your ex! That would be good payback! :)

  15. yeah, it was pretty awesome.

My parents were also athiests too. Tee he he…. I’m pretty sure Neil isn’t my dad though since my dad is too out of touch to know about blogs much less go trolling his way through them.

  16. Follmeister – Got it….. your parents are now on the ultra-secret watchlist…..just in case……. :)

  17. Murray is just the best

  18. Carl – Yep, he’s one of our best. I would love to play a round of golf with him :)

  19. Lighten up Frances is still heard around here occasionally, although the GKs don’t know what it means.

  20. Judith – Yep, most people around here under the age of 40 probably have no idea what it means either ….. :)

  21. Love Stripes! Saw it on a 1st date…no, I was not old enough for the rating but I looked old enough! Made the oldest nephew watch it several yrs ago so someone would get the references :)

  22. Kim – I gather that means you are still quoting the movie all these years later? Now…THAT is the sign of a great movie :)

  23. I use “lighten up Francis” about once a week, at work and at home. This was half a good movie. The first half as great, the second half in Europe.. lame.
