Movie Flashback: Dirty Harry

I know what you’re thinking. “Did he fire six shots or only five?” Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

Dirty Harry was released in 1971.

It was the first film in which Clint Eastwood starred as “Dirty” Harry Callahan, a San Francisco Police Inspector with a “shoot first, ask questions later” method of Law Enforcement.

The film would spawn four sequels, Magnum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact, and The Dead Pool.

In the film, Callahan is chasing a sadistic serial killer called Scorpio. The killer was loosely based on the real-life Zodiac Killer that was terrorizing the Bay Area at the time the movie was in production.

Unbelievably, the role of Dirty Harry was originally given to Frank Sinatra. He backed out of the project and a search was undertaken for a younger actor to play the role. Both Steve McQueen and Paul Newman turned down the role. It was Paul Newman that recommended that Clint Eastwood would be good in the role. So, without Newman, we might never have had Eastwood in one of his signature roles of his Hollywood career.

Callahan’s weapon of choice in the film is the .44 Magnum. After the film was released, sales of the gun dramatically increased.

In a 2008 poll by 20th Century Fox, the .44 Magnum finished as the 2nd most popular movie weapon…..behind the Light Sabre from Star Wars….

The film was made for $4 Million dollars and earned nearly $36 Million at the Box Office.

All these years later, when it came time for me to send Clint Eastwood a photo to be signed as part of my autograph collecting hobby, I just had to choose one of him as Dirty Harry Callahan.

  1. What. An. Awesome. Movie.

  2. Brainrants – if you are a fan, you might head to Target or the store that begins with “W”….and check out the DVD’s. I recently got a DVD with the first four Dirty Harry Movies altogether for $9….. can’t beat that!

  3. I don’t go to the store with a W, it scares me, so does Clint. I have seen you around and about so i thought i would drop in for a cup of tea.. so how are ya?.. c

  4. All four Dirty Harry movies for $9? Dang, gots me some shopping to do! Loved all of ‘em, especially the one where Tyne Daly gets killed. No, I’m not out to have people murdered. I just found her character so dang ANNOYING. Sometimes a character is just begging for one in the ten ring…..
Though for an autograph, I’d have to get his from Kelly’s Heroes. World War 2, Tiger tanks, gold, Donald Sutherland as a 60′s hippie in 1944 – just so dang much GREAT in one neat package!
(Not like I’m dropping any hints for a review or anything………)

  5. ceciliag – I am great…. how are you? Always nice to meet a new reader :) Have a great day :)

  6. No-Hio – Yep, got mine at Target on Sale….. all that’s missing is The Dead Pool…which really wasn’t that great anyway…. :)

  7. Go ahead . . . make my day! :D

I love the Dirty Harry movies . . . and the Any Which Way You Can movies . . . and the Pale Rider movies . . . and the Hogs Breath Inn (Clint’s pub in Carmel) . . . and lots of other pubs too!

    Write on!

  8. nrhatch – PHILO BEDDOE!! I had forgot about him! I loved those movies as well. “Right turn Clyde!”….. ha ha Thanks for adding some more movies to the list to be profiled :)

  9. Ya just gotta love Clint Eastwood. Having grown up in the country, shoot first and ask questions later was my mother’s motto. It was us three women in the house. I should say a mother and two small daughters. Of course, my mother told the county sheriff that she would shoot first and then drag them into the house before she call the sheriff. LOL

  10. mzem – That sounds like rural justice here in Texas :)

  11. OOOOOOOO I needs me a .44 Magnum. Just call me Clint.

  12. Linda – How about Linda Eastwood …. :)

  13. Well more great memories but I can’t buy me a .44 magnum anywhere. Been to the Target and W stores equivalent here but they just don’t sell those things. And I haven’t managed to get a set of Dirty Harry movies. If/when I do I shall close myself up in the house for the weekend and over-indulge.
    Thanks for the memories…
