Her early career found her working as a backup singer and model. She sang backup for acts such as Chaka Khan, Lou Rawls, and Jermaine Jackson.
As a Model, she appeared in Glamour, Cosmopolitan, and was the first African-American to be on the cover of Seventeen.
Her debut album “Whitney Houston” was released in early 1985.
I remember buying that first album and thinking that this woman had one amazingly powerful voice!
She quickly became one of the most popular female recording artists of the 80′s.
She was the first African-American Female singer to recieve heavy airplay on MTV.
Whitney Houston has won 6 Grammy Awards during her career.

As an Actress, her credits include “The Bodyguard“, “The Preacher’s Wife” and “Waiting to Exhale“.
From 1992-2007 she was married to singer Bobby Brown.
The lady has battled many personal issues over the years, but she will always be remembered for having one of the greatest voices in music history.
Whitney Houston is now 48 years old and is still active in the music industry. She is currently reviving her acting career and is planning to star in a film called “Sparkle” co-starring American Idol star Jordin Sparks. She will also produce the film.

Until I was in middle school (when Whitney became popular), Other kids would often tease me about my name. That stopped. HOWEVER, it started a new phase of, “Your name’s Whitney? Like in, Houston? Soooo….. Can you sing?” Aaaarrgghhh……

Carl – Yep, it’s sad to think of just how much bigger she would have been, without all the drama in her personal life. I kind of agree with brainrants…..seems things went downhill fast for her when she hooked up with Bobby Brown.
