“The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!” is a classic comedy released in 1988.
Produced by the same team behind the hilarious movie “Airplane!”, this is another film that you have to watch about a dozen times before you will even come close to catching every joke and sight gag in the movie.
The film starred:
Leslie Nielsen – Lt. Frank Drebin
George Kennedy – Capt. Ed Hocken
Priscilla Presley – Jane Spencer
Ricardo Montalban – Vincent Ludwig
OJ Simpson – Nordberg
The film was based on characters created in the short-lived sitcom “Police Squad!” which aired in 1982 on ABC and only lasted a total of six episodes.
Bo Derek was originally supposed to play the role of Jane Spencer.
Leslie Nielsen was primarily known as a serious dramatic actor prior to his small role in “Airplane“. That role, coupled with this starring role in “The Naked Gun” launched Nielsen into becoming a major comedic actor over the last part of his career in Hollywood.
Prior to “The Naked Gun“, Priscilla Presley had spent the previous five seasons on the hit TV Drama “Dallas“.
The film had two sequels, “The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear” (1991), and “The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult” (1994).
The Queen’s Reception scenes, where Lt, Drebin ends up mounting the Queen of England while trying to protect her, was filmed at the famed Ambassador Hotel just before it’s closing. The Hotel was the sight of the Assasination of Robert F. Kennedy.
Sadly, Leslie Nielsen passed away in 2010 at the age of 84.

The movies were good, but I liked the TV show better. And if you ever want to freak yourself out, plug in this movie back-to-back with “Forbidden Planet”!

No-Hio – Watch Nielsen in the Barbara Streisand flick “Nuts”……. he plays a total creep and it’s hard to believe that he was Frank Drebin…..
