Music Flashback: U2

U2 is an Irish Rock Band first formed in 1976.

The group was originally known as “The Hype” but changed their name to U2 in 1978. They chose the name U2 because of it’s ambiguity and open-ended interpretations.

U2 is:

Bono – Lead Vocals, Guitar
The Edge – Lead Guitar, Keyboards, Vocals
Adam Clayton – Bass
Larry Mullen Jr – Drums, Percussion

In a rarity for a group that has been around for 35 years, the original lineup of the group is still intact and has remained so throughout the groups career.

The release of the 1983 album “War” rocketed the group to stardom here in the US.

U2 has released 12 Studio Albums over the course of their career.

They have sold over 150 Million Albums worldwide, making them one of the top-selling musical groups of All-Time.

The group has won a total of 22 Grammy Awards, more than any other band in history.

The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.

Rolling Stone Magazine ranked U2 as #22 on it’s list of the 100 Greatest Acts in Music History.

Their hits have included:

New Year’s Day
Pride (In the Name of Love)
Sunday Bloody Sunday
With our Without You
I still haven’t found what I’m looking for
Where the Streets have no Name
Desire
Mysterious Ways
One
Hold me, Thrill me, kiss me, Kill me
Staring at the Sun
The Unforgettable Fire
Beautiful Day
Vertigo

And many others…..

Six of the group’s hits have reached the top-10 on the Billboard Charts in the US.

The Hits “With or Without You” and “I Still haven’t found what I’m Looking for” both reached #1 on the Billboard Charts in the US.

The Album “The Joshua Tree” remains one of the top-selling albums in Music History, having sold more than 25 Million copies to date worldwide.

Their most recent album, “No line on the Horizon” was released in 2009.

The group is still active and frequently tours the globe.

  1. BEST BAND EVER! Will so leave the hubs for Bono… still! You made my day! Now I need to pull up all my u2 music and relish in almost all their albums… you did fail to mention their HUGE disaster of music…Album POP… dreadful. I guess it is like the 80′s fashion look we all have to have a bad moment- Pop was their 80′s fashion mistake!

  2. Miiisssss Viiittttoooooo – Yes…. I seem to remember you liked this band just a bit……. :)

  3. Wasn’t U2 the official band of the IRA for a while? (I KID! I KID!)
I do have to give them credit for not getting the typical rocker “large head syndrome”. Well, not TOO much, anyway. ;)

  4. Oh, man. I had a GIGANTIC crush on Bono all throughout junior high, when all of my (juvenile) friends were still listening to Ace of Base and the Macarena. I’ve since outgrown both the crush and my love affair with U2 in general– I haven’t even listened to any of their songs since the “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” album. Though “Achtung Baby” remains one of the greatest albums of all time. Every track is CLASSIC.

  5. They may be a “Flashcurrent”. Really looking forward to seeing the new Biography they are doing for them!

  6. Chip – Yep, they are one of the few bands of that era that are still going strong….
