Music Flashback: Paul Davis

Now, it’s time to profile a singer that many of you under the age of 40 may have never heard of, though chances are good you have heard some of his hits on classic radio.

Paul Davis is an artist that produced great music through the 70′s and 80′s. Now, his music has unfortunately been relegated to “Hey…I recognize that song!….he sang that?” status, which is a shame, because he was a talented singer and songwriter.

Paul Davis first hit the Billboard Top-40 in 1974 with his hit “Ride’ Em Cowboy“. It was the 1977 release of his signature hit “I go Crazy” that really launched his career. “I go Crazy” peaked at #7 on the Billboard Charts and spent an amazing 40 consecutive weeks in the Billboard Top-100, which at that time, was a record for any single record.

I go Crazy” is one of my favorite ballads of All-Time.

From 1978-1982 he had a number of hits including “Sweet Life“, “Do Right“, “Cool Night“, “65 Love Affair“, and “Love or Let Me be Lonely“.

65 Love Affair” would be his highest charting pop hit when it reached #6 in 1982.

After 1982, Davis turned his attention to Country Music. He had two #1 Country Hits, “You’re still New to Me” (with Marie Osmond) in 1986, and “I won’t take less than your love” (with Tanya Tucker and Paul Overstreet) in 1988.

Paul Davis also wrote the #1 Country hit “Meet me in Montana” that was recorded by Marie Osmond and Dan Seals.

Paul Davis died of a heart attack in 2008. He had just turned 60 years old.

  1. I know ALL those songs by heart, but I can’t for the life of me picture his face, or remember a video of him singing. Yet another “blessing” of the many meds I’ve taken for my headaches.
If only you could rebuild your internal database as easily as one on a computer’s hard drive. :(
