Music Flashback: Carole King

Another great artist who’s music I grew up with in the 1970′s.

Carole King is an American Singer, Songwriter, and Pianist.

Her and first husband Gerry Goffin formed a Songwriting partnership in the early 1960′s in New York City.

Their first hit as songwriters was the 1961 hit “Will you still love me Tomorrow?” which was a #1 for “The Shirelles“. The classic song has since been recorded by artists such as Dusty Springfield, Laura Branigan, Linda Ronstadt, The Four Seasons, Dionne Warwick, and King herself.

By the late 60′s, Carole King was performing as a singer in her own right.

Her breakout came with the 1971 release of the album “Tapestry“.

That album held the #1 spot on the Billboard Album chart for 15 consecutive weeks and remained in the top-100 for an astounding 6 YEARS.

Tapestry” sold more than 25 Million albums worldwide. It was the top-selling solo album in US History until Michael Jackson’s THRILLER achieved that status.

Carole King has recorded 25 Studio Albums over the course of her career.

Her solo hits and hits she wrote have included:

It’s too late
I feel the Earth move
So Far Away
Smackwater Jack
Jazzman
Nightingale
Only Love is Real
Hard Rock Cafe
One Fine Day
It’s Going to take Some Time
The Loco-Motion
(You make me feel like) A Natural Woman
Take good care of my Baby
Will you still love me Tomorrow?
You’ve got a Friend
The Reason
Some Kind of Wonderful

(My favorite song, though it was actually on a later album)

Carole King has won 4 Grammy Awards in her career.

She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a Songwriter.

She is a member of the Songwriter Hall of Fame.

Carole King is now 69 years old. She spends much of her time as a social and environmental activist but still performs and records quite frequently. She recently completed a successful 2010 tour with longtime friend James Taylor.

Her great music is as timeless now as it was all those decades ago.

Responses

  1. Someone who never gets enough credit for her writing of so many songs performed by others. Many of my friends just knew her as a singer! Such a pity.

  2. “you hold me in your hands like a bunch of flowers. . .” She’s great.

  3. Christine – Yes….people that don’t like her music….just don’t like music……… she is a classic. I’d pay to hear her sing when she is 100 years old….. though I probably won’t be able to hear anything myself by then…… :)

  4. Thanks – I need to put some of her music on my Christmas wish list. Love her stuff.

  5. k8edid – Ask for some I-Tunes gift cards for the stocking ….. :)

  6. She aged well and involved lot social causes. Her contempts great ones too – Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Melanie, Linda Ronstadt and Joan Baez.

  7. Carl – The ladies you listed have provided us with some great music. :)

  8. Christine, those lyrics are from “The Right Thing To Do” by Carly Simon, not Carole King
