Music Flashback: Supertramp

Supertramp is a British Rock Band first formed in 1969.

They were originally called “Daddy“, before changing their name to Supertramp in 1970.

The band played a unique style of Progressive Rock that was popular during much of the 1970′s and 1980′s.

During the peak years of the band, Supertramp was:

Roger Hodgson – Vocals, Piano, Guitar, Bass
Rick Davies – Vocals, Keyboards
Dougie Thompson – Bass
John Helliwell – Saxophone, Woodwinds, Keyboards
Bob Seidenberg – Drums

Supertramp released 13 albums over the course of their career.

Their hits included:

Dreamer
Bloody Well Right
It’s raining again
Breakfast in America
The Logical Song
Take the long way home
Goodbye Stranger
Cannonball
My Kind of Lady
Give a little bit

Their top hit here in the US was “The Logical Song” which peaked at #6 on the Billboard Charts in 1979.

Unbelievably, they never had a hit reach higher than #7 on the British Charts in their native England.

Lead Singer Roger Hodgson left the band in 1983.

The group continued on until breaking up in 1988.

In 1996, original member Davies reformed the band, still minus Hodgson.

Supertramp continues to tour the globe playing their hits. Rodger Hodgson also frequently tours as a solo singer and still plays many of the Supertramp favorites.

Responses

  1. I LOVE Supertramp. Now where did I put my list of music to order from iTunes?

  2. Christine – That list must be getting pretty long by now… :)

  3. Thanks, Mark. I may or may not have been given the nickname Supertramp in high school, and this may or may not make me feel a little cooler about it :)

  4. Tori – If they did call you that in HS….I’m sure they meant it in the most “super” way possible….. :)

  5. Mate, Supertramp are from another planet! It’s a proven fact, no mere human band can be that proggy yet score major hits.

When it comes to coolness at school I once owned a Supertramp belt buckle (I’m talking about mid-late 90s here) and nobody had a clue who they were. They sort of thought it was an ironic statement about girls who sleep around, which made me laugh. Of course I came from a small town where Iggy Pop was once banned from playing a concert so that just goes to show the sort of place I come from.

    Keep rocking the Supertramp!

  6. I love Supertramp . . . especially the Breakfast in America album with The Logical Song!

    Thanks, Honky Cat.

  7. When Jon Anderson left Yes in the ABWH days, Roger Hodgson made the very short list for replacing him.

  8. Supertramp was REALLY considered Prog Rock? Seriously? My God, look at ME being the left-wing pinko Commie back in the day! :D

  9. No-Hio – That’s what WIKI says….. and we all know that WIKI and EVERYTHING ELSE on the Internet are NEVER wrong :)

  10. Supertramp – Greatest band and most unappreciated band in the history of Earth. I’ve been listening to Supertramp & Roger Hodgson almost exclusively since I was 19 in 1977 (“discovered” them just prior to Even in the Quietest Moments’ release). They have been my addiction for 35 years as of Jan 2012. The greatest rock album ever is ‘Crime of the Century’. For anyone who disagrees – you’ve never heard it, or you’ve never “heard” it – what an experience!

  11. I’ve been lucky enough to see both the “new” Supertramp and Roger Hodgson in concert this past year. Thrilled to see them both but by far the better show is Roger Hodgson. Rick (Supertramp) doesn’t engage and connect with the audience the way Roger does. Roger reaches out and Touches his audience personally. The audience loves him for it so it really makes his concerts an “experience” not just music. Roger also does several songs he’s written since leaving Supertramp that are simply amazing songs. Like most true Supertramp fans, I would love to see them perform together again. That said, I believe everything happens for a reason and I have been personally blessed having Roger’s “post Supertramp” music in my life…it’s beautiful music.

  12. Yikes with all the great comments I hate to say they never caught on with me…:(

  13. Chris – OK Chris…. you what that means…… You are now in Musical Timeout……. move your chair over to the corner and sit facing the wall for the next 15 minutes and think about what you have done…. Good Grief….. you don’t like Supertramp? Where have you been living? Siberia? Canada? oh wait a minute…. that’s right…Canada….. you spent years listening to Gordon Lightfoot and Anne Murray…… Well, they are good…. but you’re still in timeout! so go….. no arguing….. the clock is starting right now……. and don’t turn around…. no cheating! go! :)

  14. OK I will go for a timeout with a pout and lovely songs dancing through my brain..of Gordon Lightfoot…now you’re talking!!! :) I mean :(

  15. Chris – If you stay in timeout like a good girl….. I’ll profile GL for ya in the next couple days :)

  16. It’s a deal!!!!

  17. Chris – Alrighty then…. Gordon will be coming up in the next few days….. I’m gonna go sit in the tub and rock out to “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” to prepare….. :)

  18. As a Brit I got to see Supertramp on home soil in 1977. Been a huge fan since Crisis What Crisis. We now go to Roger Hodgson’s gigs. Two hours of solid musical genius… and Chris, Canada loves Roger Hodgson. We have travelled to Canada three years in a row to see him perform there…his shows in Orillia with orchestra and choir are out of this world. When you’re out of time out.. go check youtube!
